Do Herbs Work and are they Safe?
If they didn’t work and weren’t safe, we wouldn’t be here as a species. It is all we have ever had, until we began using heavy metals and pharmaceutical drugs as medicine in recent centuries. Herbs have an excellent safety record throughout history. According to Norman Farnsworth, PhD, former director of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, UIC: “Based on published reports, side effects or toxic reactions associated with herbal medicines in any form are rare. In fact, of all classes of substances reported to cause toxicities of sufficient magnitude to be reported in the United States, plants are the least Problematic.”
However, we do have modern concerns that involve interactions with drugs. Since the herbs are nourishing, most of them actually enhance a drug’s effectiveness. Some activate our detoxification mechanisms, thereby purging toxins and drugs from our cells. It is important to know which do what, especially when you are using medications essential for your life. Plus our body of knowledge continues to change and grow. A professional herbalist is committed to remaining up to date with recent research discoveries and can address these concerns between you and your medical practitioner.
